Hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a plant native to West Africa. It is an annual herb cultivated for its stems, petals and calyces.
Dried Hibiscus flower are usually dark red in colour and have an intense, herb-like aroma with a fruity flavour, similar to cranberries.
Hibiscus flowers are rich in Vitamin C, thought to be high in antioxidants and to help lower blood pressure. They are used in numerous products- as an infusion in herbal teas, as a natural diuretic, as a beverage and food colouring as well.
Quality is a function of taste and colour primarily, followed by cleanliness and other factors.
